Why We Wear Red for Heart Month

Why We Wear Red for Heart Month

When February comes around, you’ll see red everywhere — shirts, ribbons, posts, and photos filled with love and awareness. But for heart families, wearing red isn’t just a color choice. It’s a way of honoring a story that changed everything.

For those of us who have lived inside the world of congenital heart disease, Heart Month is deeply personal. It represents children who fight bravely, families who learn to survive uncertainty, and a community that understands what it means to show up again and again.

Wearing red is about remembering

For many families, Heart Month brings back memories that never really fade — hospital rooms, long nights, surgeries, and waiting. Wearing red becomes a quiet way to say, I remember. I remember the strength it took to get through those days, and I remember the children and families still living it now.

For heart parents, red often represents resilience — not just of our children, but of ourselves. It’s a reminder that even in the hardest seasons, we kept going.

“I wear red for…” has a name behind it

When people say “I wear red for…,” it’s rarely abstract.

It’s for a daughter with HLHS.
It’s for a son who had his first surgery days after birth.
It’s for a heart warrior who didn’t make it home.
It’s for the families still sitting beside hospital beds today.

Those words carry names, faces, and stories — and that’s what makes Heart Month so meaningful.

Why awareness still matters

Awareness isn’t about attention — it’s about understanding.

Congenital heart disease affects 1 in 100 babies, and yet so many families feel unseen when they enter this world. Wearing red helps start conversations that might not otherwise happen. It reminds people that heart disease isn’t just something that affects adults — it impacts babies, children, and families from the very beginning.

Awareness also opens the door to compassion, support, and action — especially for families who are still in the thick of it.

Comfort is part of how we show up

At Born Brave Boutique, Heart Month isn’t just about what we wear — it’s about how we show up.

Our brand grew out of life inside the Pediatric Cardiac ICU. What began as a creative outlet during that season has become a way to support families who are still living it today — through heart-centered apparel, gifted comfort bundles for families currently inpatient, and a private support group for CHD parents called Linked by Love.

We believe comfort matters. Familiar clothing, small gestures, and reminders that you’re not alone can make a heavy season feel just a little more bearable.

Getting ready for Heart Month

Many people choose to wear red throughout February to honor heart warriors and families — at school, work, hospitals, and in everyday life. Preparing ahead allows space to participate in a way that feels intentional and meaningful.

Heart Month isn’t about rushing or pressure. It’s about choosing how you want to show up — whether that’s wearing red, sharing a story, supporting a family, or simply learning more about CHD.

Many families choose to prepare ahead of February so they can wear red throughout Heart Month in a way that feels meaningful to them.

Honoring every heart story

Heart Month reminds us that behind every statistic is a story. Behind every red shirt is a reason. And behind every act of awareness is the possibility of connection and care.

Whether you wear red for your own child, someone you love, or the families you’ve never met but deeply care about — it all matters.

As we head into February, we carry those stories with us — and we wear red to make sure they’re seen.
