as fast as your eyes move

to the next.
You feel the lump rising in your throat.
You swallow it down.
So small.
So fragile.
Yet somehow
so much strength.
You have no choice.
You say goodbye…
for now.
They wheel her down the hall.
You’re allowed to walk beside her
only until the elevators.
The doors open.
You take a breath.
Tears well up again.
You push them back.
You refuse to let them fall.
The doors begin to close.
You hold your breath
watching her disappear behind them.
Still holding it
longer than you should.
Because if you breathe
the tears might come too.
The doors shut.
You finally exhale.
Proud that you held it together.
Stayed strong.
Just like her.
And then—
from around the corner
he comes running.
Half his jacket still going on
as he reaches us.
He had just gotten off shift.
He knew today was the day.
He wanted to see her off.
He wanted to see us.
To make sure we were okay.
And in that moment
the lump in my throat I had been fighting
the tears I had been holding back
the breath I had been carrying
all came rushing out.
We fell apart.
Tears flowing freely.
Because his kindness
his presence
his heart
finally made it safe
to let go of everything
we had been holding onto.
